South Ossetian Opposition Leader Hospitalized After Raid On Her Headquarters

Alla Dzhioyeva attends a protest by her supporters in Tskhinvali on January 28.

Alla Dzhioyeva, the opposition candidate whose victory in a runoff ballot in November for de facto president of Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia was swiftly annulled by the republic's Supreme Court, was taken to a hospital after a raid by some 200 masked security personnel on her headquarters in Tskhinvali.

Accounts of what happened, and of her condition, are contradictory. Dzhioyeva had planned to hold her inauguration on February 10, despite warnings from acting de facto President Vadim Brovtsev that doing so would constitute an attempt to seize power illegally.

The security personnel forced their way into Dzhioyeva's headquarters on February 9. Some eyewitnesses say they hit Dzhioyeva on the head with a rifle butt and she lost consciousness. The South Ossetian Interior Ministry has issued a statement denying this. Deputy prosecutor Georgy Kabulov said Dzhioyeva passed out when she realized the security personnel planned to take her to the prosecutor's office for questioning.

Shortly before the security personnel forced their way into the building, Dzhioyeva reportedly had an argument by telephone with one of her former backers, Russian wrestling team trainer Dzhambolat Tedeyev, who tried unsuccessfully to persuade her to call off her planned inauguration.

Medical personnel at the hospital in Tskhinvali said Dzhioyeva, who is 62, suffered a minor stroke, but had regained consciousness. She has reportedly rejected an offer to transport her to a hospital in Vladikavkaz, the capital of neighboring North Ossetia.

Dzhioyeva told the Russian daily "Kommersant" on February 9 that nothing would stop her going ahead with her planned inauguration. Asked why she had not tried to register for the March 25 repeat presidential ballot, she said she would not be permitted to do so.

In fact, the agreement she signed in December with outgoing President Eduard Kokoity explicitly gives her the right to participate. Nineteen candidates have applied to register for that election. But according to a recent poll cited by "Kommersant," only 48 percent of the electorate intend to cast ballots, which implies that those who voted for Dzhioyeva in last November's runoff intend to stay at home, having "already made their choice."

Oset people have no choice, between "big bear" Russia, and "little bear" Georgia.

But there is hope = United Caucasus. Sons of Caucasus, can be unite, we are old neighbours, we are brothers, we have same destiny. Just pray to the only one God, and honestly want from him, to give us a United Caucasus State. We can repeat 1917 ! Daghestan-Chechenia-Ossetia... old Alban lands, we can unite.

When I lived in Tskhinval I learnt about lagdzhinag and Irondzhinag. Where are these Ossetian characteristics when Ossetia men can beat a helpless 62 year old lady. O how brave you are when facing women. This is a shame for all Ossets.

How can men beat a 62 year old helpless women? Shame on Ossetian men. What happen to the word "Irodzhinag & Laghdzing". Honorable characteristics of traditional Ossetians from the day of the bible. Instead we now have Ossetian young men who are no more then hooligans and thugs. How sad for the heroes who gave their lives for Ossetian honor and are buried at the cemetery at school no. 5.

This is the same separatist government that burnt every Georgian village in the conflict zone to the ground, and committed ethnic cleansing on both Georgians and pro Georgian Ossetians.
One should not be surprised at this behavior from such a governments security services.

Also remember the security services themselves will be disappeared if they don't follow the orders of scum like Kokoity.

Dimitri Sanakoyev warned that this would happen if Russia was allowed to control the province, and he was right.

Hey Andro, shut up for a change. We know who you are and how you lurk on these sites looking for ways to convince people your garbage propaganda is true. If anyone helped commit ethnic genocide in the past several years, it's your people who did it. and don't pretend you're not a dirty Georgian.

No Michael, I am not a Georgian, I am however a New Zealander.

Ethnic cleansing in Georgia has been carried out almost exclusively by Russians, Apsua, and Ossetians.

Of course, your racist attitude is apparent in the term "dirty Georgian", which is a pity, considering that in Tbilisi Ossetians, Armenians, Russians etc live together with the majority Georgians without racism of suffering oppression, compared with the racist policies of Russia and it's puppet administrations in the separatist zones.

Such a shame that such vile people as yourself still contaminate the world.

You're a fool Andro. and we all know what you're trying to pull. Your claims are laughable, as much as your claim that you are a Kiwi. I bet you are scared that someone on the Internet is noticing your games, right? Now be a good boy and shut up for a change.

This is obviously putin's kgb tactics, that just never seem to end. The second someone tries to come to power in the region, who is not willing to do everything that the russian side deems fit, ends up in the hospital (at best!).

About This Blog

Written by analyst Liz Fuller, the "Caucasus Report" blog will offer the sort of in-depth analysis that was the hallmark of the "RFE/RL Caucasus Report." It also aims, to borrow a metaphor from Tom de Waal, to act as a smoke detector, focusing attention on potential conflict situations and crises throughout the region.
