UN Report Finds 'Credible Evidence' Of War Crimes In Sri Lanka Conflict

The United Nations says an investigation has found "credible evidence" that the Sri Lanka government -- as well as the Tamil Tigers -- committed war crimes in the last days of the war against the separatist rebels.

The report blamed the government's attacks for "tens of thousands" of civilian deaths in the last months of the war.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon commissioned the report in 2009 when the decades-old civil war in Sri Lanka ended with the defeat of the Tamil Tigers.

The report was made public in New York on April 25, although the Sri Lanka government had asked the UN to withhold its publication arguing that it would undermine reconciliation efforts.
