KHARKIV, Ukraine -- Hundreds of striking public transportation workers in the east Ukrainian city of Kharkiv are picketing the municipal council building today to demand their overdue salaries be paid in full, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.
An RFE/RL correspondent reports that the protesters are demanding the city council include the issue of their wages on the agenda of its session today.
The transport workers went on strike on Monday (December 20), affecting trolleybuses and trams in Ukraine's second largest city.
A total of 162 trams and 196 trolleybuses remain in the city's four depots. On a normal day, up to 600,000 passengers use trams and trolleybuses in Kharkiv.
The workers say they have not been paid for five months. According to local unions, the Kharkiv City Electrical Transportation Company owes the transport workers some $3.8 million.
