Suspect In High-Profile Killing Arrested In Georgia

A court in Tbilisi has ordered a policeman suspected in a high-profile killing be taken into custody.

The Tbilisi City Court on February 9 ordered the arrest of policeman Gia Sosanashvili in connection with the killing of Yuri Vazagashvili, who had campaigned for the punishment of police involved in an operation that led to the death of Vazagashvili's son and another person.

Vazagashvili was killed on January 20 by a hand grenade planted at the grave of his son, Zurab, who died during a police operation in 2006.

Three days after the deadly explosion at the gravesite, Georgia's Interior Minister Aleksandr Chikaidze resigned, saying he felt "moral responsibility" for Vazagashvili's death.

Eleven former and current police officers were arrested on February 2 and charged with "premeditated murder" in connection to 2006 operation.

Sosanashvili, who was detained on February 7, pleaded not guilty and called the charge against him "absurd."
