A 66-year-old woman in Switzerland has given birth to twins after receiving in vitro fertilization (IVF) in Ukraine.
The Swiss tabloid "Le Matin" confirmed on March 5 that the woman, a Protestant pastor living in a remote village in the eastern Swiss canton of Graubuenden, delivered two baby boys by Cesarean section two weeks ago.
The unmarried woman, whose identity has not been revealed, has become the oldest woman to give birth in Switzerland, breaking the previous record held by a woman who delivered a baby girl at the age of 64.
IVF, in which egg cells are fertilized by sperm outside the mother's body, is permitted in Switzerland only if parents are considered young enough to raise their children to maturity.
Ukraine provides IVF treatment regardless of age.
