Russian Warplanes Make More Sorties Over Syria

The Russian Defense Ministry says its warplanes have carried out 39 sorties and hit 51 Islamic State targets over the past 24 hours.

According to the Defense Ministry, the Russian jets hit targets in the regions of Hama, Latakia, Damascus, and Aleppo.

Since Russian air strikes began two weeks ago, Syrian troops have been on the offensive on several fronts around the country.

Russian warplanes have been carrying out air strikes in Syria since September 30.

Since the Russian aerial offensive began, Syrian forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have been on the offensive on several fronts around the country.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on October 17 that Syrian government forces -- backed by Russian air strikes -- had captured the villages of Wadihi, Sabqiyeh, and Shgheidleh in Aleppo Province.

It added that fighting on the southern edge of Aleppo Province killed 17 militants and eight troops and pro-government gunmen.

Government forces control roughly half of Aleppo with insurgents controlling the rest of it.

Based on reporting by Reuters and AP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
