Tajik Lower Chamber Approves Visa-Free Travel Bill For Western Tourists

By RFE/RL's Tajik Service
DUSHANBE -- The lower chamber of Tajikistan's parliament has approved a bill that would permit visa-free visits by U.S. and European Union citizens, as well as nationals of some countries in Southeast Asia.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmudjon Sobirov told journalists on May 25 that, according to the draft law, visitors from the chosen countries would be able stay in Tajikistan without an entry visa for one month.

Sobirov added that the government hopes the new bill will attract more foreign investment in Tajikistan, stimulate overseas trade and develop the Tajik tourism industry.

The Senate still must approve the bill before it can be sent to President Emomali Rahmon for signature.
