Iran has told world powers it is ready to resume stalled nuclear talks at the "earliest" opportunity.

Chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili made the offer in a letter to European Union chief diplomat Catherine Ashton, who represents the United States, France, Britain, Germany, China and Russia in the talks.

The letter, dated February 14, was vague on whether Tehran was ready to address concerns over its nuclear program.

Ashton in October said in a letter that the powers could meet with Iran if it was ready to tackle those concerns.

On February 15, Iran announced advances in its nuclear program despite increased Western and UN sanctions. Western powers suspect that Iran is seeking to build a nuclear bomb -- a charge Iran denies.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said the message was “ambiguous,” but constituted a positive sign.

Iranian Nuke 'Not Likely'

In related news, U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has told a Congressional committee that it is "technically feasible" that Iran could produce a nuclear weapon in one or two years, "but practically not likely."

During the hearing on February 16, Clapper also told the Senate Armed Services Committee that he doesn't believe Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei "wants a nuclear weapon at any price" and would decide based on "a cost-benefit analysis."

Testifying alongside Clapper, U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency chief Ronald Burgess said Iran is "unlikely to initiate or intentionally provoke a conflict," but could respond to a strike against its nuclear program by closing the Strait of Hormuz and launch missiles at regional U.S. forces and allies.

Both men also said they do not believe Israel has decided to strike Iran.

Earlier on February 16, Israel's defense minister Ehud Barak also downplayed Iran's claims of nuclear advances, dismissing them as exaggerations.

The U.N and the NATO allies are total suckers if they go back into negotiations. This has happened several times while the Iranians keep going ahead with their nuclear program. The only way to negotiate is to have an agreement that is able to verify that cessation of expansion is stopped while in negotiations. Does no one remember how Hitler used negotiations to bring his armies up to snuff.

Iran wants to keep its nuclear developments clandestine and buried in a mountain to prevent their destruction. Would that sound to anyone like they are developing nuclear power generation technology. That's just another lie in the long list of lies over the years. Are you gullible enough to believe it?

I think what "Anonymous" mean here is that Iran is just as entitled to develop its own nuclear technology, as so many other countries - India, Pakistan, N. Korea, Israel + the five permanent members of the UN SC

Its fresh from you Bill Webb to call anyone gullible. YOu wanna talk about lies: how about starting with your support of a brutal dictator in form of Musharaf with million of dollars of American foreign aid who kept his country under marshal law for over 27years, backed extremist Islamist and the murderous ISI from which Pakistan is still reeling and trying to recover from, How about brutal dictator like Hossnie Mobarak being the second biggest reciever of American foreign aid, How about all the military and economic support for Saddam during the 80s and then turning on him for his "WMDs and NUKES"...."Yellow cake from Niger"?? wasnt it?! Yet your sanctions on that country turned them into the poorest country outside Africa with second biggest rates of infant and maternal mortality, how about overthrowing a democratically elected Mosadegh who was swiss educated lawyer and an aristocrat under the guise that he was a communist in 1950s and reinstating your puppet Shah regime that brutalized his people for the next 30years all so that you and your British buddies could get your oil for bugger all, how about when Iran put its nuclear enrichment on hold for 8years during the presidency of Khatami and completely complied with Int atomic agency and Irangot nothing back but further humiliation and insults from America. I suggest you read Scott Ritter "Target Iran", ex marine, UN weapons inspector and ballistic missiles advisor to Clinton administration who clearly states that the Iran nuclear issue has completely been hijacked for political gain of a handful of nations. How about you read "Overthrow" by Steven Kinzer and learn about your deceitful and poisonous foreing policy for the last 100year before you come here and audaciously call other people and countries "Liers"... And Ivan from California "LOL"...How dare talk of peace when people are being dragged out of their homes for which they have lived in all their lives at gun point, your family getting beaten in front your eyes while your home is demolished right there and then and then you told you can piss off and rot in a refugee camp...I bit Fox news dont show you those scenes do they?! they too busy coming up with the next "how Arabs are terrorists" clip...Pick up a book, read, stop believing everything your laimstream media tries to brain wash you with and then we may a better planet to live in

GlobalCitizen: You are correct, leaders will place moronic and untrue "facts" out there to achieve an objective. They ALL do it. Yes, the Niger yellowcake was farcical intel and it pained Powell to no ends to submit it.

Your entire rant is American politicians lying for a cause, in this case, a foreign one. Are you new to this? IS it only done by rich-anglo-saxon-conservative males living within the confines of CONUS? And the Shah looks pretty darn good right now from what my Persian friends keep telling me. Not perfect, but an improvement to the current bunch.

Seriously, you mention the worthlessness of Fox, but what, everything CNN, BBC or Al Jezeera is true? There is always a slant and half-truths.
When is the last time YOU read any source that you didn't entirely agree with an open mind? Not saying go out and buy a Malkin or Coulter book, but have you read anything by Bodansky or Pacepa?

And Mr.Webb, stop mingling with Mr.Mush, you traitor!

apart the fact that the IAEA has done everything
for Iran does not develope any kind of nuclear technology
--- any kind ---

problem remains
even if they were to do a nuclear bomb

there is no right for anyone for prevent Iran has the bomb.

Israel has the bomb?
yes, everyone knows that,
but nobody does anything
or makes inquiries or promises to bomb Israel.

a very simple example of how hypocritical is it all our occidental world

is sufficient to remenber when France has taken the decision to adhere to the "Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty"

France was not at the end of its testing program for the nuclear bomb
so
France first ended it's program
they tested their nuclear bombs in Morurra
and then
only then in 1996
France signed the "Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty"

This is our world of honest, fair, democratic, more just and always on the right side Western countryes

Please Anonymous enlighten us as to the date when France and Israel threatened in voice, print, smoke signal or sign language to wipe another nation from the earth.
I mean that sort of thing just doesn't occur by parliamentarians, clerics, military leaders in Iran on a daily basis or anything, right?

You really are a silly goose Anonymous, now please don't hack me.

Interesting Demetrius, you have offered nothing of substance in your rebuttal. No i am not new to this, i know that wrongs have been done by many powerful civilizations thru out history, but what has that got to do with the wrongs that have been perpetrated now?! a thousand wrongs dont make a right. I never said Shah was bad, personally I think he turned a backward, feudal society into a modern one and many of the infrastructures we have till this day in Iran is from his vision and foresight. All the universities and hospitals we have are becs of him. However the suffocating political environment which he created pushed people in the arms of the kookie mullahs who have now replaced his thrown and the rest is..well history.
I never said everything in BBC or CNN is true, however compared to those two, Fox is a like a low budget soap opera. And precisely becs i;m not new to this i'm prepared to ask questions and use my logic and reasoning rather than beleive everything i'm told, point in case being the "yellow cake Uranium"...you dismissively say "oh, it pained him to submit it", sorry if I don't lose any tears for him, his gangs supposed "MISTAKES" have cost HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of inoccent civilians lives in Iraq, this ain't X-box, these are real flesh and blood people who were crushed, killed, maimed becs of thousands of tons of bombs dropped on their homes...so i wouldn't be so quick to dismiss these mistakes as they have genocidal consequences. The problem is back then if someone had raised an eyebrow about the Iraq war people like you would have called them "conspiracy knots" but its only 10-12 years later that we're starting to slowly learn that may those people were not so wrong. People are now saying we cannt afford to kill and bomb people and then learn thtat ooopps may be we were wrong. I heard you bagging few other people about "False Flag" operations, quiet condescendingly i might add. FF operations have been around for centuries and the Israeli recent history is dotted with them. But again we are finding these things 40-60yrs later bcs people like you dismissed their possibility at the time. The bombing of Americans in Egypt that turned out to be Israelis trying to frame the Egyptians becs they were getting quiet worried about the cozy relationship US was formenting with them and the bombing of the US cruiser during the 6day war, again Israelis trying to frame Egypt and therefore get America involved. At the time if any one had raised a question, you would have called them a "silly Goose"..but now it is the doubters who are the Geese..!!(and i realise that sounds not quiet right).
Many people in the Intelligence circles would tell you that if Iranian secrete service wanted you dead u be dead, you woun't be reading about it in the paper the next day, so its more than reasonable to raise an eyebrow or two when suddenly 3-4 butched up terror operations all conveniently being linked to IRan at the time that Israel is trying to rally support for its attack on Iran. It's simply connecting the dots. Or at least being suspicious and not buying it all at face value.
