Terrorism Suspect Killed By Russian Police In Daghestan

A counterterrorism operation in the Daghestan region of Russia's North Caucasus ended with the killing of an alleged militant by police, Russian law enforcement officials said on July 11.

The suspected gunman, Admir Talibov, was shot dead in the village of Miskindzha in the Dokuzparinsky district in Daghestan after being trapped in a house by a police siege.

Talibov rejected mediation offers and instead opened fire on police before being killed. The house caught fire during the operation.

The Russian National Antiterrorism Committee said Talibov was a member of the Yuzhnaya gang that killed two policemen and wounded 18 civilians in February in an attack on a Daghestan road patrol post. He was on the federal wanted list.

The committee said he bought the car that a suicide bomber detonated at the police checkpoint in that incident and helped install explosives in the car.

It said Talibov had repeatedly attempted to depart for Syria to join the Islamic State extremist group.

Based on reporting by Interfax and TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
