Pakistan Says Three Soldiers Killed By Indian Troops

Pakistan's army says Indian forces fired across the de facto border in the disputed region of Kashmir, killing three Pakistani soldiers.

Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas described the shooting on August 31 across the so-called Line of Control -- which divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan -- as "unprovoked."

He said Pakistani forces returned fire in retaliation.

A spokesman for the Indian Army gave a different account.

Lieutenant Colonel J.S. Brar said. "They [Pakistani forces] opened fire first and we retaliated."

Pakistan and India have fought three wars since 1947.

Earlier this year, the two sides resumed a formal peace process, which was broken off after the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people.

The attacks were blamed on Pakistan-based militants.
