"Time" magazine has named "The Protester" as its "person of the year" for 2011.

The news magazine referred to protests in the Middle East, which spread to Europe and the United States, and recognized the protesters as "redefining people power" around the world.

"Time's" "person of the year" is the person or thing that the magazine feels has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year, for good or for worse.

Last year, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg got the honor.

Past winners include U.S. President Barack Obama and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, as well as Bono, lead singer of the band U2.
