Turkey Vows 'Great Revenge' For Kurdish Attack On Soldiers

Turkish troops patrol in Hakkari Province in southeastern Turkey.
TEXT SIZE - +
Turkey has vowed "great revenge" for the killing of two dozen Turkish soldiers by Kurdish militants in the deadliest rebel attack in Turkey in several years.

Turkish officials said about 100 fighters from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) carried out simultaneous attacks under cover of darkness on seven remote army outposts in the country's Hakkari Province, near Turkey's southeastern border with Iraq.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara was in "hot pursuit" of the militants and had sent air and ground forces into northern Iraq in a response that he said falls within the "limits of international law."

"According to the latest confirmed information from Cukurca, we lost 24 of our soldiers and 18 soldiers were wounded," Erdogan said. "As of now, wide-reaching operations, including hot-pursuit operations, are continuing in the region within the framework of international law."

Erdogan cancelled a foreign trip to Kazakhstan and convened an emergency meeting with his interior and defense ministers, intelligence chiefs, and top generals.

Turkish security sources said commandos had pushed as far as 8 kilometers into Iraq and aircraft have hit targets near a guerrilla camp.

Speaking to journalists in Istanbul, Turkish President Abdullah Gul vowed revenge for the attacks.

"No one should forget this: those who inflict this pain on us will endure pain many times over," Gul said.

"Those who think they will weaken our state with these attacks or think they will bring our state into line, they will see that the revenge for these attacks will be very big and they will endure it many times over."

Increasing Regional Tensions

The PKK, which is fighting for greater Kurdish rights from bases in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, confirmed that it had carried out the attacks, in which it said five of its guerrillas had died.

In an online statement, the group said: "Our guerrillas carried out simultaneous attacks starting at 1 a.m. (2200 GMT) on regiments in the center of Cukurca district and at Bilican and surrounding military posts.... Nearly 100 soldiers and special forces police have been killed or wounded."

In Washington, U.S. President Barack Obama condemned the attack and said the United States would continue its "strong cooperation with the Turkish government as it works to defeat the terrorist threat from the PKK."

In Brussels, EU foreign-policy chief Catherine Ashton said she was appalled by the "shameful terrorist attacks." She said the EU was ready to help Ankara confront the violence and that the PKK would remain on the bloc's list of terrorist organizations.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he "condemn[ed] in the strongest possible terms the recent attacks."

He added, "There is no justification for such acts of violence...NATO allies stand in solidarity in the fight against terrorism."

Masud Barzani, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan, condemned the raids as a "criminal act" and called for "an immediate end to these attacks."

"This action is first and foremost against the interests of the people of Kurdistan," Barzani said. "Violence and conflict are not a solution."

Kurds live in an area that sprawls across the borders of Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria.

The attack and Turkey's response could intensify instability throughout the region, as U.S. troops in Iraq prepare to pull out by the end of this year, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad continues a bloody crackdown on protesters challenging his rule.

Tensions between Turkey and Iran also are on the rise over Turkey's decision to host a NATO antimissile radar.

C'mon Erdogan and Gul... STOP DENYING THE REALITY!... Kurds are feed-up with your 'empire'.. and rule on their lands. They want to be free from your government and your ottoman-mania.

But becareful Erdogan, you can kill some hundreds of people there.. but you cannot kill millions of kurds. Remember what happened to Gaddafi and Mubarak... you wont be able to resist there, if all kurds there rise up against your dominance... And Israel might be thinking in that option, isn't it?

The Turkish leadership has caused too much pain and misery to the Kurds over the decades. The Kurds want an end to the oppression. If Turkey wants peace, free Kurdistan. Or Else more to come.

o say Turkish soldiers are killed in Kurdish attacks is like saying the Americans were killed by Arab attacks in 9/11. Which journalism school did you graduate from? There's are difference between Kurds & terrorists, although PKK is portrayed as acting for the Kurds, it is a terrorist group with mainly Kurds but also Turks, Arabs & Persians. PKK controls the drug trafficking in Europe, then does this mean Kurds are all criminals?

Turkey has to be held accountable for the hundreds of years of murder, persecutions, and genocide, committed by Turks against all their neighbors: Armenians, Serbs, Greeks, Bulgarians, Kurds and Syrians. Should one be surprised that US government considers Turkey its ally, along with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia? Surely not Armenia or Serbia who suffered at the hands of Turks for centuries.

You speak as if Armenians, Serbs, Greeks, Bugarians, Kurds and Syrians haven't had their moments either. By your logic, every person on this earth would today be held accountable for something their ancestors did. And where do you stop? Nations are made of cities are made of tribes are made of families. At what point are you no longer part of the people who should be held accountable for something another person's ancestors (but in the same country as you) did?

Kurdish freedom should not come at the cost of giving Armenian lands to them! thats what turks probably might want to do, if Kurds get a free state. it should come at the cost of TUrkey SYria and Iraq where they actually lived for centuries and Armenian from VAN to the north. And they truly deserve a free state and not and oppressed province under turks

Sorry but its time to crush the Kurds. Sure it must be oppressive to be a Kurd but if you bait the dog its going to bite back with all its teeth and that what we should see in the coming days.

Many of the countries colonized many regions in the history. If there is Bulgaria and Serbia that is just because of the high respect level of Ottoman policy. On the other hand remember what Serbia did in Bosnia, nobody's hands are clean. I believe that the Americans and French should keep quite when it comes to talk about peace. All we know what you guys have been doing so for and watch how you terorise the whole world. When it comes to PKK, if Kurds want to have freedom, they would have it so far. The rules of the game changed a lot. PKK has internal problems at the moment and non of them care about Kurdish people rights. Do you think they question the race of the soldiers they kill? Half of the soldiers died in PKK attacks are Kurd.
On the other hand all you guys should forget about Armenian case. Turkey will never come to the point Armenians desire. Armenia should find another issue to unite its nation. They can work and produce eg, instead of dreaming to get conpensation from Turkish Republic. All you guys, please read more history from different sources..

Guys what you know about Turkey and pkk issue? just bullshit which you heard from somewhere! First of all could you show me on the world map where is that kurdistan? And you Felipe Muñoz their empire is not Ottoman or Turkey, their original lands is Iraq. If they want their freedoms they can go back to Iraq to be real terrorists. And if they want to be free they re already free. They can have education in Turkish schools, universities, they can take healthy services from our hospitals... What we Turkish peoples doing, what we Turkish people have rights they can do,they have too.Even without paying tax, they already never do it.They re pitty, they need us,they need our tax, they can live ust our tax.And as i see still you have rancour which remained from Ottoman empire like whole world, whole Europe. And the Gaddafi and Mubarek! NEVER IDENTIFY TURKISH PEOPLE AS ARABS! WE RE TURKISH.We know better than you who is arab people. I dont know how you re watching the news or what part of your body listening news or reading! Do you think is it the same situation with Libya or Egypt? It was just against the regime. If yes we re here,we re Turkish, we re not like Libya or Egypt. If they want to do something what they re waiting for?If they can take something from us they do! Where you take the rights to kidnap civillian people,to kidnap teachers, doctors and civilian people? Is it right or against the human rights? You dont know nothing about us. If necessary NOT HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE EVEN WE CAN KILL MILLIONS OF KURDISH PEOPLE DONT WORRY! And Armenians,Serbs,Greeks,Bulgarian,kurds... What about you guys? All of you! What did the USA in Iraq?Afghanistan?Vietnam? What did the Germans to Israel? What did the France in Algeria? First look at yourself! Thank you for your comments MUSTAFA BİNİCİ. Yes this is right ''PKK controls the drug trafficking in Europe'' when we give up to thinking USA,Israel,EU countries and Arabs are our friends, then we can handle of this problem!!!

Dearest Allahtan ahmed djan ,we know the wid turkeys can kill millions ,if necessary, they`ve done that on numerous occasions killing tens of millions-the problem is can the cold turkeys do anything else, but kill, lie and degrade themselves lower than animals???You dnt have any friends allahtan ahmed djan and you will never have-you can buy fellow allahtan bandits but that`s not friendship-that`s the common interest of the mafia gang.As you will never be accepted into the EU I suggest you take your long way back to Mongolia where you came from -there is still time to do it peacefully-otherwise all that you`ve done to others will be done to you-and dont forget to fall on yer knees and repent-Allah is great and he will forgive those closest to his heart-his allahtans.

good that look who is talking by saying Allah, mentioning from Allah!!! The interesting thing is you re mention from Allah. You support kurdistan, you support pkk, your leader öcalan, fehman huseyin,karayılan... those people re your Allah!!! öcalan said that i m the half of God u remember? so in this case you should talk about zoroaster(zerdüşt). And where is your another answer against my all comments. Not just i wrote something about killing millions of hundreds.we dont have any friends and we wil never yes you re right.Thats why we re saying ''THERE IS NO FRIENDS FOR TURKISH EXCEPT TURKISH''! Bcoz we dont have any help from someone, bcoz we re not like you,we re Turkish,we re nation,we re government,we re state.I dont know where you re living. Has the pkk took your children to mountain by using force? or your children has died from by Turkish soldiers in this conflict? i m not saying war.bcoz this is not war. to mention about war it has to be 2 country.even it s out of question.just a dream.we believed you,Israel,Arabs,USA,EU for several times.so whats the result? nothing.EU is for you not for us.we re not drug trafficking in EU like you.dont worry man not just Mongolia.once upon a time we managed whole world, whole asia, africa and europa.and not mongolia bcoz i m really pleasure to live in Turkey. I m not living in mountains and caves like animals!you want to kick my ass from this lands it s showing that this lands are yours.then show me your ID card.which flag on it?what is written on it?one more dilemma as i see u support pkk.their religion is zoroaster, zerdüşt.probably it s written Islam on your ID card.If u dont accept those throw away your ID card and dont use public buildings, public area.while you re doing that kind of attacks on us, it makes us getting closer eachother.what pkk doing for kurdish people? they re just using you.you re just dying without know for what.dont worry we re praying 5 times per day to Allah,we re begging on our knees.we dont make fun of with Allah and namaz like you!!!
