Turkmen President Wants 'Eyesore' Satellite Dishes Removed

Satellite television dishes in one neighborhood of Ashgabat
TEXT SIZE - +
Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov says he wants satellite dishes removed from the tops of buildings in the capital, Ashgabat, calling them an eyesore, RFE/RL's Turkmen Service reports.

Turkmen television showed Berdymukhammedov instructing the deputy prime minister in charge of transportation and communications, Nazarguli Shaguliev, to take appropriate measures.

"We have to bring some order to the situation with housing in the capital, because on top of every building there are tens of satellite dishes these days. This damages the architectural beauty and appearance of these buildings," Berdymukhammedov said.

"Therefore, Shaguliev, we should install cable in all those multistory buildings and remove all but two or three satellite [dishes] from every building."

Berdymukhammedov did not say if there would be any penalties for those who refused to take down their satellite dishes.

Similar calls from Berdymukhammedov, and before him President Saparmurat Niyazov, were largely ignored by Ashgabat residents.
