Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said his government is planning to end the unlimited supply of free natural gas to citizens.

Berdymukhamedov said on January 17 that gas meters will be installed in households to encourage people to consume energy more efficiently.

The president, however, didn't give any time frame for such action.

Gas, electricity, and water have been supplied free-of-charge to Turkmen households since 1993.

Berdymukhamedov had in the past pledged to extend that policy until 2030.

The nation of 5 million people, is estimated to have the world's fourth-largest natural gas reserves.

However, authorities in recent months have mentioned that the domestic subsidies have proved too costly for the government.
