Video Pussy Riot Members Found Guilty, Jailed For Two Years

A court in Moscow has found the three members of the punk feminist performance-art group Pussy Riot guilty of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred after performing what they called a "punk prayer" at a landmark Moscow church in February.
Ukrainian activists from the Femen movement have cut down a cross in central Kyiv in a gesture of solidarity with the members of the Russian feminist performance-art group Pussy Riot, on trial in Moscow.

The cross -- erected during Ukraine's 2004-05 Orange Revolution in memory of the victims of communism -- was located near the International Center for Culture and Arts in Kyiv. A topless Femen activist used a chainsaw to cut down the cross.

Femen said in a statement, "On the day of the sentencing, the Femen women's movement expresses its support and respect for its Russian colleagues from the group Pussy Riot. ... By this act, Femen calls on all healthy forces of society to mercilessly saw out of their heads all the rotten religious prejudice that serves as a foundation for dictatorship and prevents the development of democracy and women's freedom."

The three women from Pussy Riot have been charged with hooliganism motivated by religious hatred after performing what they called a "punk prayer" at a landmark Moscow church in February.

The women deny intending to offend believers, arguing the February 21 protest was part of a broad movement against Vladimir Putin's decision to return to the Kremlin as president for a third term.

A verdict is expected shortly.

I guess this fool thinks this is what passes for "art" in the West she wants to pay attention to her. Who can blame her? Vandalism. This is a small group of clowns, with a tiny constituency of mostly middle-aged adolescents. That anyone could still think this is about "free speech"..... Few people care PR got two years for its public nuisance. Can RFE move on to more important matters?

Unbelievable, this pack of morons is at it again!!!!!!

How does cutting down a cross dedicated to the lives lost during the Orange Revolution strike a blow for Pussy Riot? If anything it just shows how stupid....how very stupid this bunch is.

Just a childish attempt for attention.....

It is a monument to victims to 3 million Ukrainians who have died of artificially created hunger by a Stalin mode in 1933.
"Orange" revolution here at anything. It passed without victims.

Not by Stalin but by Russian influx in Ukraine, like in Donetck,
Even not of necessity - Russian occupiers and influx mess
Any non-Russian nation and kill. Having given food rations
In Russian's occupied cities, they raided nearby villages
Populated by Ukrainians - took all food, placing militias.

At both ends of a village (usually one street) Russians
Were killing with bulets any Ukrainian, leaving a house.
Russ ate rations, to kill non-Russians is eternal hunger
That never leave Russia's "Magogies" and their "larvas".

We all know that the symbol of the early Christians was a fish
Еmperor Constantine forced the people worship to cross ..
God is not say, that cross his symbol
Therefore, action should be considered as damage to city property, with subsequent compensation of damages....

Two billion Christians say the "cross" is their symbol. That includes every denomination and virtually every church. Your comment is as juvenile as the vandalism. Stop trying to make cute excuses for this deliberate act of hate.

Information for Leo from the United States:
--------------------------------------
People in Russia are very skeptical that there are Christians in the U.S.,especially when they see how Americans singing and dancing in churches..
Our Orthodox faith is the only correct-so say Russian:"These Americans and the West, degenerates and perverts"..
Another Russian Christians say that the damned Jews killed our Russian Christ,
Here in Russia, religion is not to appease but to hate and beat the faces..
For the crowd a cross is fetish and despised object for normal adequate human..
Crosses -fetishes should be removed from the domes and other places inside the church, where fanatics can dance their demonic dance...

Leo, your comment is juvenile. The original symbol of the Church was the fish and the Chi-Rho symbol, which were much more prevalent than the cross.

That aside, cutting down this cross to the memory of the victims of communism was very stupid.

Leo, - there many "crosses" in Eastern Ortodox countries,
Specially in Russia, but fillings are not genuine, not clear.
They fill hate to non-Russians, ajusting it to hate-quires.
They call Motherland - "Roditcta", Marry - "Bogoroditca"
And say Jews (not Levi or Rome) killed Russian Jesus.

One Papa blessed Hitler and Mussolini, and nazi Cross
Was marching on Europe with millions burning torches,
Americans used both, crosses-torches to burn Africans
And Western Chriastians as dissingenuine as Russians.

Some people genuinly believe, but nobody on this planet
Would dare to defend my creation's priorities - no nation.
Total human incommunicado against my right - to create
And be named for my creation. Read some explanations
By my comments - "intervew... ...Raoul Wallenberg" fate.

Wakhtang, in this case a Fish and Konstantin out of wack.
Simply like old USSR times - Russia starting the squizing
And their neighbors follow the lead, following "Pussy" quak.
Putin fall Yanukovich's Ukraine - staffed by Russia's mean,
Inspired by elevating of Russian language - let's kill Ukraine.

It is not symbol of "Cross" or a "Freedom of Pussy" to quak.
It is symbol to kiill "Cross" of Free Ukraine by the evil "durak".

Prophet Muhammad never specified any symbol for Islam. It was the Ottoman Turks who by using the star and crescent popularized it as a symbol for the religion. Still, that symbol is sacred enough to be atop many mosques and some national flags.

Exactly...and I bet no member of Femen would have the guts to chop down a star and crescent to protest the oppression of women in Islam. Christianity is an easy target. I'm a non-believer, but I don't condone this act, not do I see how it's relevant to the Pussy Riot case. I do support Pussy Riot, by the way - but I don't support Femen, at least not in this case. Counterproductive an understating it. Stupid and infantile is more like it. It's never a good idea to destroy monuments honoring victims of war or oppression.

Salaam Sey, you are correct and Islam has no "idols". However, people who come together for any reason like to have some way of identifying themselves to others, often with a flag or other symbol. Therefore, perhaps the cresent moon and star is not so much the symbol of Islam as it is the symbol of those who follow Islam.

We are probably now venturing into the historical division between the Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox Churches.

The sign of the cross in not mentioned in the New Testament but appears to have evolved from the early Aramaic Church: "I extended my hands and approached my Lord, For the expansion of my hands is His sign, And my extension is the common cross; That was lifted up on the way of the Righteous One." (A History of Christianity in Asia, Vol. l., Samuel Hugh Moffett, Orbis,{Odes Sol.42:1,2,}, 1998, pg.52)

I do empathise with their motivations but they have acted in ignorance.

After Communism took hold in the 1917 October Revolution, the systematic persecution of religious people began: Jews were slain, churches were demolished and conscientious dissenters were carted off to the gulags for reeducation. This persecution spread to the Eastern bloc countries like Ukraine and some of the individual stories of torture simply make your heart break.

Frankly, the desecration of this memorial adds absolutely nothing to the undermining of dicatorship, the furtherance of democracy or the strengthening of women's rights - all laudable aims. They have got it very wrong here.

This is exactly what happens when you glorify a bunch of teenage punks desecrating churches and religious symbols.

You know what the funniest thing is? Only the Godless West has given support to these vandals, while the majority of Russians have little or no sympathy for them.

And I still am abated at how a naked woman cutting down a Cross can be considered a symbol of "women's rights."

I support the action of Ukrainian girls also because that the cross should not stand as a monument to the victims of Stalinist terror.
Among those victims were members of other religions and atheists.
Without knowing the girl carried out an act of historical justice.
People who are planning to erect monuments in memory of victims of terror, I advise to strain theу brain not the other place..
If there was a stele with a list of names of victims, it would be correct and reasonable.

If this is what is called freedom of speech, then I would wish to live under a dictatorship. Can I destroy the house of someone with whom I disagree? Can I cut down public monuments just to make a mark? She is lucky, this is a Christian sign. Cut down a Muslim symbol....we know the bloody consequence...

The Ukrainian authorities stated that the cross in this place has been installed without their permission...group of faithful enthusiasts Installed it...
This means that it has been installed illegally...If so, then the girls for what they cut down the cross can not be held responsible..

Why do you immediately rush to extremes?..-"Can I destroy the house of someone with whom I disagree?"..
Girls destroyed not someone else's house but the cross set illegally by believers- fanatics...

Frankly, I think that this summer is just too hot and that's why people who live in Kiev and can not make it to the beach in Odessa or Yalta are cutting crosses - just to let the summer steam out a little bit. Or maybe they just got paid by some TV channel to carry out this action - otherwise there would be nothing to talk about on TV during the hot summer months, and now there appeared an "interesting" topic :-)).

They already got murdered my mother and killing me, using
Russia-CIA instigations!
Why USA paying funds to "Free Europe" if Germans gave their enemies and criminals run the show?

Is it Putin-Merkel "gesheft" to devide Eastern Europe and destroy in the process USA, Free World and me, as they murdered my mother?

Stalin never did anything bad, Russians did!
Cross was symbol of crimes of canibalistic Russia, perpetrators of "Golodomor" -
It is why Putin and Yanukovich destroyed it!

I don't see any difference between the stupidity of this act of "Femen"

and the equally stupid act of Pussy Riot

Both are intentionally blasphemous just for attract media attention

who regularly take the bait .

Nice to see how
people who support pussy riot
now condemn this act of Femen

strange cases of schizophrenia .

Any way ....

I have a tip for Femen and Pussy riot

for the next epic action

go in an Islamic country

maybe inside a mosque

I'm really curious to see what would happen in those places
