KYIV -- Communist party activists and supporters have clashed with Ukrainian nationalists during an unsanctioned march in Kyiv, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.
Hundreds of Communist supporters marched down Khreshchatyk, Kyiv's main boulevard, to mark the 94th anniversary of the October Revolution in defiance of a ban by the municipal authorities. They carried red banners and placards saying, for instance, "We Have Preserved the Communist Party, Let Us Resurrect the Soviet Union!" and, "Long Live the Communist Party!"
Dozens of activists from the nationalist organization Svoboda (Liberty) tried to stop the marchers. Scuffles and heated exchanges ensued, but the police did not intervene until the nationalists started throwing eggs at the marchers when they reached Independence Square in the city center.
Police arrested three people, who Svoboda activists told RFE/RL are all Svoboda members. But an RFE/RL correspondent reported from the scene that at least one of them is a Communist activist.
