Fans, stars, and music industry leaders have paid tribute to American singer Whitney Houston, who died in Los Angeles at the age of 48.

Houston was popular in the 1980s and '90s, with hits including "How Will I Know," Saving All My Love," and "I Will Always Love You," but drug use took its toll and most of the publicity surrounding her in recent years had centered on her personal problems.

The cause of her death in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel remains unclear. Police said there were "no obvious signs of criminal intent."

Supporters gathered outside the Beverly Hilton, holding candles and singing songs.

"It's just devastating that she's gone," one fan, Monet Mitchell, said. "She's one of the greatest singers of all time. I've listened to her since I was a little girl. I just can't believe it. My prayers go out to her and her family."

Houston's death is expected to overshadow the music industry's Grammy Awards, due to be held in Los Angeles on February 12. She had been expected to attend the ceremony.

in reading of her death, it was a bit of a shock to remember how long it's been since she was recording hits and considered a-list. probably the last of her stardom was her roles in 'waiting to exhale' and 'the preacher's wife.' that was 15 -16 years ago. she was more famous as a drug addict since then.
