U.S.-Led Forces Drop Nearly 5,000 Bombs On Islamic State

The U.S.-led coalition of countries attacking the Islamic State (IS) group have dropped nearly 5,000 bombs on IS targets in Iraq and Syria.

The U.S. Defense Department said on January 7 that the air strikes are responsible for damaging or destroying more than 3,000 IS targets.

The Pentagon said the U.S. and allied aircraft have hit 58 tanks, one 84 Humvee armored vehicles, 303 pickup trucks, 26 armored vehicles, and 394 other vehicles since the coalition's attacks began in Iraq in August and in Syria one month later.

The majority of those vehicles had been seized by IS fighters from the Iraqi Army during the Islamic State's expansion into northern Iraq last summer.

American miltiary leaders say the air strikes have stopped the advance of the IS group in Iraq and disrupted its crude oil network.
