U.S. Government Sues To Return Dinosaur Skeleton To Mongolia

The U.S. government has filed a lawsuit that seeks to return a nearly complete skeleton of a dinosaur related to Tyrannosaurus Rex to Mongolia.

The Manhattan district attorney alleges the skeleton was discovered in Mongolia's Gobi Desert between 1995 and 2005 and was brought to the United States with false documents, claiming it was from Britain.

The 70-million-year-old skeleton was sold at auction last month for a little over $1 million.

Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj thanked the U.S. government for its action, calling the fossil "an important piece of the cultural heritage of the Mongolian people."

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
