A Pakistani man detained at the U.S. prison for terrorist suspects at Guantanamo Bay has been charged with plotting along with Al-Qaeda to bomb U.S. targets and assassinate former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
According to the charges, Majid Khan planned to kill Musharraf by blowing himself up inside a mosque in Karachi in 2002. The plot was foiled, however, when Musharraf failed to show up as expected.
Prosecutors also allege Khan plotted with Khalid Sheikh Muhammad -- the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks -- to blow up underground gasoline storage tanks in the United States. And Khan is accused of conspiring with Al-Qaeda operatives in Indonesia to bomb bars, cafes, and nightclubs frequented by Westerners.
Khan, who grew up in the eastern U.S. city of Baltimore, was captured in Pakistan in 2003 and has been held at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay since 2006.
