Yemeni military officials said that presumed U.S. air strikes had killed at least 18 Al-Qaeda militants in a mountain base area used by the terrorist group.
The Yemeni officials, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said the strikes targeted Khanfar Mountain near the town of Jaar in southern Abyan Province, which is under the control of Al-Qaeda militants.
The French news agency AFP cited witnesses as saying drones had fired missiles at targets and that two missiles were fired from the sea.
AFP also cites residents and local officials as saying U.S. and Yemeni warplanes launched strikes in Abyan and al-Bayda provinces on March 9-10, killing 33 Al-Qaeda militants.
The militant group Ansar al-Sharia confirmed the attack in a text message and said three of its fighters were killed.
U.S. authorities have not commented.
