Obama Meets With Libyan PM At White House

By RFE/RL
WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Barack Obama has hosted Libyan Prime Minister Abdurrahim el-Keib for a previously unannounced meeting at the White House.

According to an official press release, Obama encouraged Keib to follow through on plans to hold national elections in June and "stressed the importance of transparency and engagement with Libya's newly energized civil society."

The leaders also discussed increased cooperation on border management, weapons security, and regional counterterrorism concerns.

The White House press release said Obama "applauded" Keib for his work on transitioning the country toward democracy after the violent ouster of Muammar Qaddafi in last year's uprising.

The White House says Keib will be meeting with other U.S. officials while in Washington this week.
