At least 15 people have been reported killed in the western Uzbek city of Urgench after a bridge railing collapsed during a concert, sending spectators into the lake below, Uzbek officials say.

Sources at Uzbekistan's Emergency Situations Ministry told RFE/RL on August 10 that 17 people were hospitalized.

The incident occurred late on August 8 during a concert by popular local singer Navruz Sobirov at an Urgench city park featuring artificial lakes spanned by bridges, known as Youth Lake.

There was no official statement on the number of casualties.

But witnesses say the number of killed could be as many as 30, many of whom were teenagers.

An official statement from the office of Uzbek President Islam Karimov said a government commission had been established to investigate the accident.

Several parts of Youth Lake were reportedly renovated in 2013.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
