Uzbekistan's Energy, Utility Prices To Increase On October 1

Prices for electricity, natural gas, heating, and water are due to rise in Uzbekistan beginning on October 1.

On September 18, Uzneftegaz State Oil and Gas Company announced the price hike for consumers of natural gas would be 10 percent (up to 3,140.85 soms -- $1.30 per 10 cubic meters).

The move follows a 9 percent natural gas price hike in April in Uzbekistan, where the average monthly salary is about $275.

Uzbekistan's government also says electricity prices on October 1 will increase by 10 percent, while water and heating costs will rise by 7.2 percent.

The announcements come three weeks after the Uzbek government stopped subsidizing gasoline in Tashkent and the surrounding region and lifted gasoline price controls -- allowing the suppliers to set their own prices.

The move led to the closure of many gasoline stations across Uzbekistan.
