Uzbeks Arrest Suspect In Killing Of Popular TV Anchor

TASHKENT -- Uzbek authorities have confirmed that a popular TV anchor was killed and said they have arrested a suspect.

In a statement on March 3, the Interior Ministry said that a 21-year-old resident of Zangiota district in Tashkent province, whose name was not disclosed, had been detained hours after Rakhmatilla Mirzaev was found dead with "numerous stab wounds."

Mirzaev's body was found in the backyard of his house in the same district on March 2.

Investigators said they are trying to determine the motive.

Mirzaev, 61, worked for Uzbek state TV for four decades.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
