Women In Black

TEXT SIZE - +

OK, this is getting ridiculous (albeit amusing).

The latest bit of Russian electoral erotica just hit the web courtesy of Eduard Limonov and the Other Russia opposition group.

The video features three young women decked out in tight black minidresses, high heels, and sunglasses stepping out of a late-model Mercedes and entering an apparently abandoned house. As they climb the staircase, they each pull out pistols.

"The level of corruption and theft has exceeded all conceivable limits. If this continues, Russia will soon disappear from the world arena," the female narrator says. "We believe that Vladimir Putin has discredited himself as a politician and national leader. He must go."

The girls then enter a room and take aim at a row of wooden figurine bears with the inscription: "The party of crooks and thieves."

The narrator then asks: "What are you prepared to do so we have a normal president?" The women then tear open their dresses to reveal tank tops embroidered with hand grenades -- the symbol of Limonov's banned National Bolshevik Party. (See video above.)

The recent video craze was kicked off last month by a group of scantily clad young women who described themselves as "Putin's Army." That video starred an iPhone-sporting schoolgirl protagonist calling herself Diana, who called on Russian women to show their support for Putin by ripping off their clothes. The winner, Diana informed viewers, would get a new iPad.

Weeks later, a rival video by young female supporters of President Dmitry Medvedev hit the web. In the video, Veronica and Anna describe themselves as "Medvedev's Girls" and say they are "prepared to do anything for Dmitry Anatolyevich."

Walking through a park, the young women, dressed in short-shorts and high heels, then express support for the president's drive to get Russians to drink less alcohol. At the end of that video, they tell viewers, "So it's beer, or us." They then -- wait for it -- pull off their shirts.

WATCH:

I'm not even going to try to put an analytical spin on all of this. (All I will say at this point is that the "Putin's Army" and "Medvedev's Girls" videos were obviously sanctioned by the authorities, while Limonov's clearly was not.)

If anybody else wants to have a go at interpreting all this, have at it in the comments (or on our Facebook page). I usually refrain from posting curiosities like this on "Power Vertical." But, hey, it's Friday and I decided to have a little fun.

Have a nice weekend everybody.

There's nothing amusing about Limonov, he's scum and better left ignored.

And there's nothing amusing about the objectification and exploitation of women by leading Russian political figures. Russia is a horrifically sexist nation (one women is murdered by her husband every forty minutes). Amusing? I think not.

Yes Limonov is a slimeball and his NatsBol party is a nightmare. But what does it tell you that only such extreme radical parties are joining in to lampoon/criticize the ridiculous Putin fetish?

It tells me that the craven people of Russia do not deserve anything better, and therefore do not get anything better. It tells me that there is no more opposition now than there was in Soviet times because the vast majority of Russians view anyone who risks her/his life to oppose the regime as being a traitor or an idiot and turn a blind eye when they are murdered or arrested (or, as with Magnitsky, both). It tells me that Russia is a barbaric country which will collapse and destroy itself just as surely as did the USSR.

13,000 wives are murdered by their husbands in Russia each year? I hate to be nitpicky but I also hate extremely hyperbolic statistics.

Davud, you are a damned misogynist and an ignorant, iliterate jackass. How DARE you impugn this statement without doing ANY research on your own to question it.

Here is the documentation, though you don't deserve it:

We demand an apology for your arrogance and your ignorance!

Now perhaps you will go out into the world and fight to protect Russian women from the sausage grinder that is their country, and think twice before you again open your big fat stupid mouth.

The use of a humane body to promote whatever is nothing new, however, in my lay opinion, any serious political party should avoid this kind of self-promotion.
Personally, I loved the "Limonov" video, which is way better made; those, understanding Russian, may have better appreciation of the verbal part of it.
For those who do not understand Russian. this little explanation: Limonov, is not the real last name of this party's leader and it comes from a jargon name of a hand grenade (lemon-looking) you see on women's t-shirts - limonka.
Ed. Limonov has made his name as a controversial writer many years ago.
ps. the corruption is not new to Russia and has not started with Putin; it does not help the country's progress but surely will not kill it.

Nope, definitely amusing. If we can't find dark humor in dark places, we should just curl up and die.

I wish, for the sake of all my good friends in Russia, that sexism, racism, and flagrant abuses of power weren't so common. But don't forget that laughter and satire can be potent weapons against power. We should not hesitate to use them.

What a fool that Martin Luther King was, for being so serious all the time and rarely if ever using that powerful weapon of humor!

So the comunist and socialests have finally figured out sex sells.
Oh bravo, as Russia slowly slides into the 21st century, giving us a eyefull, and a good laugh.

Didn't think it could get much worse than Putin's Army video, but Limonov's effort IS worse. Its not just the Mercedes, short skirts, and young women, but the introduction of obvious violence. There DOES seem to be a pop-cult fetish (Youtube, VK, Facebookers) with young Russian women carrying/aiming/shooting small arms such as semi-auto pistols or auto long guns, but why? Is it to attract Russian male attention? Most disappointing, but I guess its hard to portray realistically in a short video the heroism of an Anna Politkovskaya or Natalia Estimirova.
