Dozens Injured, One Missing After Highway Bridge Collapses In Almaty


ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- A highway bridge under construction has collapsed in Kazakhstan, injuring 19 workers in the country’s largest city, Almaty.

The incident occurred around noon on April 24.

Almaty Emergencies Department Deputy Chief Nurlan Madiarov told reporters that rescue teams are looking for one missing worker, who might be under the debris.

According to Madiarov, 19 injured workers were hospitalized; three of them were seriously wounded.

An RFE/RL correspondent at the scene reports that a large amount of liquid concrete was spilled and rescue teams with sniffing dogs are searching for workers who could still be trapped under the debris.

At least 50 workers were on the site when the accident occurred.
