Tashkent, 9 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Uzbekistan's Human Rights Society held over the weekend its second congress in the capital, Tashkent.
Some 70 delegrates attended the congress, Abdumannop Pulatov, the soceity's chairman, told RFE/RL's Uzbek Service.
Since the society was established in 1992, it has recorded human rights violations in Uzbekistan. However it has not yet been officially registered in the country
Pulatov told RFE/RL that he and other delegates at the congress -- including members of the "Birlik" popular movement that opposes the government of President Islam Karimov -- discussed the human rights situation in Uzbekistan during the past four years.
Pulatov, who was forced to leave Uzbekistan in 1994 because of his opposition stand, said congress participants agreed that the human rights situation in Uzbekistan is "beginning to improve."
Congress delegates issued an appeal to Karimov, asking him to officially recognize the Human Rights Society and to continue supporting human rights issues.
