Blasts In Daghestan Cause Injuries

22 July 2004 -- Two explosions today at a Russian military base today in the republic of Daghestan have injured at least eight people.

Officials say the first blast occurred as a bus carrying base employees was entering a compound housing Russian forces near the Daghestani capital Makhachkala. A second blast went off several minutes later.

There were few details immediately available about the explosions. Daghestani officials say they have opened a criminal investigation into the incidents.

The attacks have not been linked to the war in the neighboring breakaway republic of Chechnya, in which separatist elements are battling Russian troops in their bid for independence from Moscow.
