Italian Journalist Missing In Iraq

20 August 2004 -- The Italian Foreign Ministry said today that an Italian journalist has disappeared in Iraq.

The ministry said the journalist, Enzo Baldoni, was believed to be in Al-Najaf, the holy city south of Baghdad that has been the theater of heavy fighting in past weeks.

Baldoni has not reported to the Italian Embassy in Baghdad for about 24 hours, the ministry said. The embassy keeps in touch with Italians in Iraq on a daily basis, but it has been unable to reach Baldoni as the journalist does not have a satellite phone.

Baldoni is a freelance journalist who went to Iraq for the news magazine "Diario."
