Ukrainian Company Under Investigation Over Iraq Deals

20 September 2004 -- Ukrainian prosecutors are investigating whether a Ukrainian company tried to smuggle surface-to-air missiles to Iraq to aid insurgents fighting the U.S.-led coalition there.

Serhiy Rudenko, a spokesman for the Prosecutor-General's Office, also said prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation against four men -- citizens of Greece, Iraq, and Pakistan -- accused of hiring mercenaries to fight in Iraq.

Rudenko declined to identify the company or to specify how many missiles could have been smuggled to Iraq.

Rudenko said the four also allegedly tried to set up a training camp to train fighters to battle the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.
