Operations Continue In Three Iraqi Cities

10 September 2004 -- The U.S. military and Iraqi troops are continuing operations in three insurgent strongholds: Tal Afar, Al- Fallujah, and Samarra.

The northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar remains sealed off today, as overnight fighting followed a massive 13-hour air and ground assault yesterday that killed at least 45 people. The U.S. military says it is targeting militants who have displaced local Iraqi security forces.

In Al-Fallujah, west of Baghdad, women and children were among the nine people reported killed by U.S. air strikes. Contacts are under way between Al-Fallujah representatives and the interim Iraqi government to restore some degree of control over the city.

U.S. and Iraqi forces entered the town of Samarra yesterday in an effort to reestablish Iraqi government control there.

The joint patrols are expected to maintain traffic checkpoints and open the Samarra bridge.
