The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which supervised the poll, said in a statement today that internal checks at the counting center turned up a number of inaccuracies following complaints by political parties.
Pascal Fieschi, the head of the OSCE mission in Kosovo, said that the recount is expected to last at least three days.
Partial results of the elections published this week showed the party of Kosovo's President Ibrahim Rugova in the lead. However, it did not have the majority needed to govern alone.
Kosovo was placed under UN and NATO supervision in 1999 after an alliance air war ended former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's crackdown on ethnic Albanians.
