Afghan President Arrives In Tehran

Hamid Karzai (file photo) 26 January 2005 -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai arrived in the Iranian capital Tehran today to begin a two-day visit to that key neighboring state.

Karzai is scheduled to meet with Iranian President Hojatoleslam Mohammad Khatami. Karzai and Khatami will also inaugurate a recently reconstructed road between Dogarun and the eastern Afghan city of Herat.

The reconstruction of the 122-kilometer road by Iranian engineers took two years at a cost of $60 million. Both sides hope the road will boost trade cooperation.

Karzai is being accompanied by a delegation that includes several of his cabinet ministers.
