Ex-Governor Charged In Ukraine


26 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Ukrainian prosecutors today charged a former regional governor with abuse of office.

The Prosecutor-General's Office said Mykola Shvets is accused of receiving his salary and bonuses despite spending considerable time outside the country between 1999 and 2003. He was at the time governor of the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region.

Criminal cases have been opened against at least five former regional officials since President Viktor Yushchenko came to power in January.
