Van Gogh Murder Trial Starts Today


A Duthch anti-hate sign (file photo) 11 July 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The alleged killer of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh goes on trial today in a court in Amsterdam.

Mohammed Bouyeri faces charges of murder, terrorism, possession of an illegal firearm, and impeding democracy.

Van Gogh was killed after his film about the treatment of women in Islamic society was shown on television.

The 27-year-old Bouyeri was seized by the police shortly after the 2 November killing.

He could be sentenced to life if found guilty.
