Ukraine Marks Fifth Anniversary Of Journalist's Slaying

A woman lights a candle near the monument to Gongadze in 2003 16 September 2005 -- Ukraine is marking today the fifth anniversary of the slaying of independent Ukrainian journalist Heorhiy Gongadze.

The September 2000 killing had sparked protests in Ukraine amid allegations that President Leonid Kuchma and other top officials were involved. Kuchma has denied any involvement.

Participants to today's ceremonies are due to form a human chain in the center of Kyiv, from the Union of Ukrainian Journalists to the presidential secretariat.

Ukraine's new president, Viktor Yushchenko, has repeatedly vowed to solve Gongadze's case, and in July prosecutors announced they had prepared a case against three men who allegedly murdered the
journalist.

But Gongadze's widow, Miroslava, said earlier this month that Ukrainian authorities lacked the will to solve the case.
