Kazakhstan Deports Kyrgyz Asylum Seeker

(RFE/RL) March 10, 2006 -- The UN's refugee agency today expressed disappointment over Kazakhstan's extradition of a Kyrgyz asylum seeker.

Agency spokeswoman Jennifer Pagonis said that on March 7, Kazakh authorities extradited Kyrgyz opposition activist Dastan Kadyrov, despite his request for asylum, as well as UN intervention in the case.

Pagonis said the extradition violated the 1951 UN refugee convention.

Kazakhstan has faced similar criticism by rights groups for allegedly arresting and extraditing Uzbek asylum seekers last November.
