Azerbaijan To Discuss Gas Deliveries To Europe

Presidents Aliyev (left) and Chirac at a previous meeting (epa) May 29, 2006 -- Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev says he will discuss the possibility of Azerbaijani gas deliveries to Europe when he meets with French President Jacques Chirac on May 30.

Speaking in Paris ahead of the meeting, Aliyev noted that Russia supplies some 20 percent of Europe's natural-gas needs, but he said that European countries are "looking for alternatives."

A price dispute between Russia and Ukraine led to brief disruptions in gas deliveries to Western Europe last year.
