Russia To Send Up To 400 Troops To Lebanon

One of the many bridges struck by the Israeli air force in the recent conflict in Lebanon (epa) September 13, 2006 -- Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov says Russia will send between 350 and 400 military personnel to Lebanon to help rebuild infrastructure damaged in Israel's war against Hizballah.

The battalion of military engineers and sappers will be sent in late September-early October and will remain in Lebanon for three to four months.

Ivanov said the Russian military will work independently from a UN peacekeeping force. Russia will also send an unspecified number of armed guards to provide security during the reconstruction work.
