RFE/RL (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty) is an independent, international news and broadcast organization to Eastern and Southeastern Europe, Russia, the Caucasus, the Middle East to include Iran and Iraq Central and Southwest Asia.
Across our broadcast region, more than 30 million people enjoy and rely on RFE/RL programming. Through broadcasts in 28 languages, RFE/RL provides news, information and responsible discussion of domestic and international issues to countries where free and independent media are not permitted or not yet fully established.
RFE/RL is a nonprofit organization funded by the U.S. Congress. Corporate headquarters are in Washington D.C., but programming originates from our Prague operational headquarters as well as from bureaus in 19 countries.
We are currently seeking an Online Writer/Editor for our Radio Azattyq (Kazakh service) Web site. This position will be based in Prague, Czech Republic.
Fluent in Kazakh, Russian and English, the Online Writer/Editor, will play a key role in the Azattyq Online Web operation, which runs one of popular Web sites in the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
The incumbent will help create content to extend the radio product online, provide high quality, accurate and credible news and incorporate interactive and multiple platform elements such as forums, polls, playlists, podcasts and WAP-enabled pages. The Online Writer/Editor must also understand and implement online best practices to help ensure the Web site is both accurate and timely.
The Online Witer/Eitor will: rewrite, develop, report, produce, and edit news and feature stories for the Azattyq’s bi-lingual Web site and for the converged, multimedia operation of the Service.
He/she will work with material from the broadcast staff as well as international news sources and original research and reporting, including interviews with persons in Kazakhstan and around the world. Will work with a standard Web-based publishing tool, but ability to use additional multimedia tools for audio editing, image manipulation and the creation of slide shows or Flash elements is a plus.
Qualifications:
- Professional fluency in Kazakh, Russian and English
- Minimum of 4 years journalism experience with proven track-record of writing and editing
- Experience with online news and/or information sites is prefered
- Demonstrated writing and analytical skills with broad knowledge of political, economic, and social structures of Kazakhstan and Central Asia, as well as strong general knowledge of international affairs
- Demonstrated strong written language skills
- Demonstrated strong commitment to journalistic integrity and objectivity
- A university degree in journalism, international relations, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in one of these disciplines Proven ability to function effectively with people from widely different national and cultural backgrounds
- Knowledge of online usability and best practices a plus
- Demonstrated ability work under deadline pressure.
- Knowledge and practical experience of radio broadcasting practices and techniques is highly desired
