Want to help make a difference in places where free media is suppressed or doesn’t exist? Our mission is to provide accurate and reliable news and information to domestic audiences in the local language. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) broadcasts news in 28 languages and attracts nearly 23.4 million weekly listeners and online visitors.

We are seeking a news correspondent to work the overnight shift in the Central Newsroom, located in our Prague headquarters. Reporting to a supervising editor, but working mostly alone, you will be responsible for writing and constantly updating the 24-hour news file that our language services rely on. We are seeking a meticulous, highly-motivated, professional journalist, preferably with experience working for one of the major news agencies. You must be passionate about the news and be able to write fast and error-free news copy with minimal supervision that conforms to Newsroom style. Native or near-native English writing skills are essential and experience in RFE/RL's broadcast region is a plus. You should be proficient in web posting and other basic web tasks, as well as recording and cutting audio. The successful candidate will be a team player as he/she is expected to collaborate with colleagues as needed and work closely with the various language service broadcasters in Prague and our foreign bureaus.

Requirements:

  • solid grounding in journalism, with a degree in journalism, a related field or its equivalent,
  • at least 3 years of experience as a reporter,
  • discipline and experience of working and writing under tight deadline,
  • ability to work various shifts, as assigned and on short notice,
  • ability to carry out independent reporting from the field and foreign travel,
  • ability to take direction while working under pressure,
  • with minimal supervision, deliver quality products that demonstrate commitment, to journalistic impartiality and accuracy, and
  • area expertise and/or knowledge of one or more of the broadcast languages is a distinct advantage.
