Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is an international broadcast organization based in Washington, D.C. and Prague, Czech Republic. RFE/RL's programs -- via radio, the Internet, and television -- reach influential people in 21 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Russia, the Caucasus, and Central Asian nations.RFE/RL's mission is to provide accurate and reliable news and information to domestic audiences in the local language. RFE/RL broadcasts in 28 languages and attracts nearly 18 million weekly listeners and online visitors. With more than 400 journalists, 750 freelancers, and 20 local bureaus, RFE/RL is one of the most comprehensive news operations in the world. It is funded by the U.S. Congress through the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG).

RFE/RL is seeking a new Director for it's Russian Service (Radio Svoboda) to lead a strategic shift in how the Service works; what it produces; on which platforms products are delivered and how the Service connects with its defined target audiences.

RFE/RL’s Russian Service: Radio Svoboda is a surrogate source of media, providing the news and information that would otherwise be available in a free media environment. It consists of almost 100 journalists working in the RFE/RL Prague headquarters and Moscow Bureau. The successful candidate will be based in Moscow but will be required to travel regularly to Prague.

The Responsibilities: Reporting to the Regional Director of Content, Distribution & Marketing Division, the selected candidate will be responsible for content development and implementation across all platforms, editorial control of audio, text and multimedia news and current affairs content and management of the Service’s staff and budget. The successful candidate will oversee operations in Moscow, Prague and a world-wide network of freelance reporters, ensuring that the news, current affairs and feature programs are measurably impacting as well as relevant to target audiences while adhering to the highest standards of journalistic integrity and accuracy.

The Challenge: Although still available on one Moscow MW and via ShortWave, Svoboda must reposition itself, its content and its brand to meaningfully connect with "influencers" on the platforms they use to find alternative sources of news and information. Svoboda is not just "Radio" any more – it has a strong online presence in Russia but must transform itself into a robust digital media organization which offers audiences a rich selection of multimedia content while providing an attractive and credible "meeting point" for their text and visual content to be posted. On-line, on social networks and on Apps.

The Right Candidate: This position calls for a creative and visionary leader, a fearless and seasoned journalist as well as an experienced and intrepid manager who can fold the best of Svoboda's 60+ year legacy and values into a more modern and digital iteration that is smart, sharp and sophisticated.

The Opportunity: The role of Director offers an extraordinary opportunity for the right candidate: the chance to re-shape a major media organization in Russia and to re-define its relationship with audiences as an independent space where information and ideas are exchanged and debates are held by today's change-agents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A university degree in journalism, international relations, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in one of these disciplines
  • Professional journalism experience including work in a fast-paced, international news organization with tight deadlines
  • Broad knowledge of political, economic, and social structures of Russia, as well as strong general knowledge of international affairs
  • Management experience in a news organization, including responsibility for budgeting, managing staff and resources, and organizing work processes
  • Proven ability to develop, present, and implement effective and innovative solutions to complex editorial, technical and operational challenges under tight deadlines
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to journalistic objectivity and integrity
  • Experience working with digital media preferred
  • Native Russian and professional fluency in English.
