Sr. Line Producer

The Senior Line Producer works closely with the Executive Producer, and is responsible for taking a daily live television show on air, gathering and approving video, text and other elements for the daily broadcast and for upcoming video reports. S/he creates and monitors the progress of show completion via the elements in the rundown, working with the Hosts/Anchors, Executive Producer, and Line Producers to select stories, tease elements for upcoming segments and manage the program clock. Exercising editorial judgment, the Senior Line Producer directs content creation for air in consultation with the Executive Producer. Works with TV team to review and approve video reports, tease upcoming reports, and plan news coverage. The Senior Producer/TV Studio Director points out daily show production issues in post mortem to news staff and works with technical staff and the EP to ensure problems do not become chronic. The incumbent provides constructive feedback regarding news coverage and programming.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for bringing live TV shows to air. During live broadcasts makes snap decisions on floating and killing stories.

Brings the vision of a project to life by creating and supervising the creation of live and taped news content, visual elements and graphics.

Understands concepts of live production, live streaming, post-production editing, sound mixing, incorporation of computer-generated graphics and special effects. Approves final edits.

Writes/reads/edits and approves news copy, packages, voice overs, sots, intros, scripts before they head into production to ensure accuracy and continuity.

Checks for facts, style, and thoroughness of reporting. Approves editorial quality, visual accuracy, and factual script accuracy before the finished piece goes on air.

Provides editorial and technical guidance to RFE/RL studio & field video producers for live and taped production. Provides feedback and coaching to video journalists in an effort to improve the quality of reporting.

Understands and applies RFE/RL’s code of journalistic conduct and editorial guidelines.

Works with video editors on projects. Keeps track of production progress on program elements. Coordinates editing, advises video editors on best editing practices.

Looks far ahead on the calendar for coverage opportunities. Presents coverage possibilities to Executive Producer.

Contributes ideas for discussion at the daily editorial meeting and the weekly look-ahead meeting.

Pulls content from other services and pushes Current Time content out to other services. Coordinates with producers from RFE/RL language services to obtain video files, transcripts, and translations. Shares Current Time content with RFE/RL’s Russian Satellite Stream, Multimedia Department, other RFE/RL language services, and other BBG entities as needed.

Takes part in relevant training sessions offered by RFE/RL’s Training department to improve her/his performance.

Stays on top of news and events in the region.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

Undergraduate BA degree (in communications or journalism preferred, or equivalent in experience.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

At least 5 years of experience directing a daily live television show with journalism/editorial/TV production responsibilities.

COMPETENCIES:

Demonstrated excellent editorial judgment, with working knowledge of relevant broadcast region.

Excellent news production and writing skills.

Knowledge of digital multimedia and television production in the studio and in the field.

Demonstrated ability to direct production team.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to drive content initiatives.

Demonstrated ability meet deadlines and to work in a changing, fast-paced environment.

Must be organized, pro-active with strong leadership skills.

Creative ability to enterprise, innovate, conceptualize and implement ideas.

Proactive, can-do attitude, with excellent interpersonal skills-- a team player with ability to work effectively with individuals within and across teams.

Must be open to feedback and on-going self-development.

LANGUAGES:

Russian as a first language

Proficiency in English

Knowledge of another RFE/RL target language, desirable
