Teenager Latifa Azizi is one of just two women currently appearing on the hit TV talent contest “Afghan Star.” She’s determined to pursue her singing career -- even if that means facing harassment from religious conservatives who consider her performances un-Islamic. (Reuters video)

the problem is the following, many nice muslims do not know neither the quran nor the hadith.

the ones who have read more, tend to develop certain attitudes, if specific passages are not set into historical perspective. yet, islam is not only about history, it's about the present and the future.

besides, the nice surat in the quran if you know how to read the book according to the more predominant muslim traditions become obsolete by the later surat, which quite often do encourage violence.
check 2:106, 13:39, 16:101. the list is long, if you are really interested just check the following:

killing of jews, christians, unbelievers (and sometimes even "hypocrite muslims"), racism, disdain:

quran: 5:33, 9:16, 9:11, 9:5, 9:28, 9:29, 9:111, 4:89, etc. etc.

hadith: bukhari, vol. 2 book 24, nr. 541 +vol.1, book 6, nr. 301

women
"dwellers in hell, ungrateful, deficient in intelligence" etc.
about zeinab: "the woman advances and retires in the shapoe of the devil" (in:ibid.).
vol. 4, book 54, nr. 460: "if a man calls his wife to bed [...] and she refuses [...] the angels will curse her [...]."

sahih bukhari 2194 "it is not permissible for a woman [...] to travel one day and night except with a mahram". (so, it's not about saudi arabia, it's precisely about islam and hadith.)
not my words, this is what the prophet of islam (muslims would say pbuh!)

anyone who is interested, should just take a quran and the hadith and read them.
check these and you'll know more about the challenges in muslim societies.

so, latifa azizi and others who dream of a musical career, will probably have to endure more death threats, unfortunately.

(or, eventually, some muslims are fed up with certain rituals and situations, come to the u.s., canada, australia and europe and some (unfortunately, a number still increasing, get alienated, and start despising non-muslims...some call for sharia, etc.)
strange...
hope muslim societies come once and for all to terms with certain ideas within their (!) traditions.
