Daniel KIMMAGE covers Central Asia as a Regional Analyst on RFE/RL's Online team. In this capacity, Kimmage writes for the daily "RFE/RL Newsline®" and edits the weekly "RFE/RL Central Asia Report." Earlier, Kimmage edited "RFE/RL Business Watch" (October 2002-January 2004).
Kimmage received his undergraduate education at the State University of New York at Binghamton, graduating with honors in 1992. He continued his Studies at Cornell University, where he focused on Russian history and the history of Islam. In 1994 he received advanced instruction in Arabic-English Translation at the King Fahd School of Translation in Tangier, Morocco. He studied Uzbek at Indiana University in 1997.
Kimmage lived in St. Petersburg, Russia, from 1997 to 2002, where he was the English-language editor and primary translator for the quarterly journal "Manuscripta Orientalia" at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His other work at the Institute ranged from a study of commentaries on the Koran to research on the expansion of the Russian empire in Central Asia. Kimmage also worked as a consultant for a number of Russian and foreign firms of St. Petersburg.
Kimmage writes frequently about politics, society, and security issues in Central Asia and Russia. He has also translated and analyzed numerous Arabic-language texts on the ideology of violent jihad.
An English-Russian bilingual, Kimmage is fluent in Arabic and reads Farsi, French, German, and Uzbek. In addition to his four years in Russia, he has traveled widely in North Africa and the Middle East.
