Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that residents of Volgograd could vote in a referendum to change their city's name back to World War II-era Stalingrad. The city was known as Tsaritsyn before it was renamed after Josef Stalin in 1925. Stalin's successor Nikita Khrushchev changed the name to Volgograd in 1961 as part of his campaign against the former dictator's personality cult. RFE/RL asked Volgograd citizens if they wanted their city to be called Stalingrad again. (RFE/RL's Russian Service)
