Greenpeace says environmental activists have stormed into the grounds of a French nuclear power plant in an action aimed to show the vulnerability of atomic sites in France.

In a statement, Greenpeace said some members had entered the nuclear site in Nogent-sur-Seine, 95 kilometers southeast of Paris, to show that "there is no such thing as safe nuclear power."

French power company Electricite de France (EDF) said seven of the nine intruders were detained. It said the pro-dawn raid was "immediately detected" and did not affect the security of the site.

France gets about three-quarters of its electricity from nuclear power.
