13 'Anonymous' Activists Indicted In U.S.

A federal grand jury in the United States has indicted 13 alleged members of the Internet hacking group known as Anonymous.

The indictment charges the 13, all of whom lived in the United States, with hacking attacks that occurred between September 2010 and January 2011 on the Motion Picture Association of America, the Recording Industry Association of America, and several finance companies.

They are accused of carrying out "Operation Payback," in which targeted websites were flooded with huge amounts of Internet traffic to shut them down.

The targeted organizations had refused to process donations to WikiLeaks or had joined efforts to stop the illegal distribution of movies, music, and other content.

Anonymous is described as a loose-knit group of hackers who support making all the world’s information available for free.
