Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says he supported President Hassan Rohani's diplomatic initiative at the UN General Assembly last week but that he does not trust the United States as a negotiating partner.
In his first remarks since Rohani’s trip to New York, Khamenei said: "While we are optimistic about our government's diplomatic staff, we are pessimistic about the Americans. The U.S. government is not trustworthy, is self-important, and breaks its promises."
Iran's supreme leader, who has the ultimate word on political and religious affairs under Iran's clerically dominated system, also said that "some of what occurred in the New York trip was not proper."
He did not elaborate on what he meant by "not proper."
